“Your eyes, ears, mind, and voice are the only tools you need to make change,” said Karembo firmly. The sound of her voice reverberated throughout the space. It was as though a simple secret had been unveiled, possessing a power that could be only be realized in the absence of sound. There was a sudden shift in the group; their eyes were pulsating with energy and sense of confidence.

Karembo is one of the most inspiring women I’ve ever met. I had the privilege of meeting her in the rural community of Chanagande, Kenya during my innovation work there, and sitting in on one of her meetings for the disabled. She is incredible; she has stared a pre-school, disabled group, youth groups, AIDS support group, and several businesses. Despite the accident that left her limp on the left side of her body at a young age and the fact she has HIV, she has managed to move and shake the world for people in her community. Nothing has stopped her from reaching beyond what seems possible.

I will be biking across America with FACE AIDS this summer, from San Francisco to Boston in honor of individuals who face impossible challenges every day. I pedal, for those who continue to inspire despite any challenge, and for individuals like you who empower others by offering support.

Where is it all going?

It is my mission to support men and women with HIV/AIDS. With our support in providing medical care, Karembo and others can continue to empower the people of their communities.

If given anti-retroviral treatment (40cents daily), the transmission rate of HIV is reduced to 1-2% between partners and from mother to child. These treatments are staggeringly successful in reducing the number if HIV infections. If caught earlier, treatment can increase the lifespan by ~30 years. An AIDS free world is not out of reach by any means.

In providing social, economic, and medical support to the people living with HIV, we are able to address the root causes of the issue. The funds we raise will go to support FACE AIDS and Partners in Health, because they have been truly effective in reducing HIV/AIDS transmissions around the world by providing this kind of comprehensive care that is needed for us to reach an AIDS free world.
